Sweet Water runs win streak to nine before taking loss

Sweet Water went 2-1 over a two-day stretch to close the week and pull its record to 9-5 on the season.

SWEET WATER 19, ELLWOOD CHRISTIAN 0

The Bulldogs no-hit Class 1A, Area 4 foe Ellwood Christian for a 19-0 win Thursday. Sweet Water tallied five hits and nine walks in the win. Reed Joiner and Chance Broussard combined for six strikeouts in the win.

Braiden Broussard highlighted the offense with a 2-for-3 day that included a grand slam, a double and three runs scored. Trace Luker went 2-for-3 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. J.T. Etheridge finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Chance Broussard scored two runs and drove in two.

Jayland Horton-Lewis scored three runs while Michael Allen Cole, Layshon Young and Chastain Washington had two each. Sasha Smith scored one run.

SWEET WATER 5, CREEKWOOD (TENN.) 2

Sweet Water traveled to Wetumpka High School Friday for a doubleheader that saw the Bulldogs beat Creekwood High 5-2.

Sweet Water opened the scoring in the top of the fourth when Smith singled in Walker Thompson for the 1-0 lead. Smith scored later in the inning after stealing third and then making his way home on a defensive miscue.

The Bulldogs stretched the lead in the top of the sixth when Braiden Broussard doubled in C.J. White and Smith. Two batters later, Etheridge singled home Braiden Broussard for the 5-0 advantage.

Creekwood later scratched out a pair of runs but could not draw any closer. Chance Broussard struck out four over seven innings for the complete game win.

WETUMPKA 2, SWEET WATER 1

It took Class 6A Wetumpka putting together a two-run rally in the bottom of the third to snap the Bulldogs’ nine-game win streak Friday night. Etheridge singled in Smith in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 Sweet Water lead.

The score stayed there until the home half of the fourth when Wetumpka got one run in on a wild pitch to tie the game. The Indians pushed another across on a fielder’s choice. That run proved the difference in the game as Sweet Water proved unable to get another hit in the contest and would have only two more baserunners.

Etheridge struck out nine over six innings of work while allowing four hits, two walks and two earned runs to take the loss.

The Bulldogs are set to return to action Thursday when they travel to Hoover to face Florence, Calera and Bartlett.
