Sweet Water baseball wins Area 4 championship

A hot start to the week has Sweet Water up to a 13-8 record with only two weeks left in the regular season.

SWEET WATER 21, ELLWOOD CHRISTIAN 0

The Bulldogs won the Class 1A, Area 4 championship with an unbeaten record Monday when they downed Ellwood Christian 21-0.

Sweet Water amassed the run total despite tallying only six hits in the game. The cause drew assistance when Ellwood issued 14 walks.

J.T. Etheridge had the lone extra base hit in the game with a triple. Layshon Young, Chance Broussard and Reed Joiner each singled once while Walker Thompson had a pair of hits.

Sasha Smith notched three RBIs while Young, Broussard, Etheridge, Joiner and Thompson had two apiece. Jaylan Horton-Lewis, Chastian Washington, C.J. White, William Etheridge, Trace Luker and Braiden Broussard drove in one run each.

William Etheridge struck out seven batters over three innings of work for the win.

SWEET WATER 8, THOMASVILLE 0  

The Bulldogs followed that win with a shutout of rival Thomasville. J.T. Etheridge held the Tiger bats at bay, striking out 10 batters over six innings of work while allowing only two hits and issuing one walk.

Chance Broussard and J.T. Etheridge each doubled once in the game while Michael Allen Cole accomplished the feat twice. Cole had three RBIs while J.T. Etheridge had two. Braiden Broussard, Joiner and Thompson each drove in one run.

The wins came just days after the Bulldogs traveled to Hoover to face a series of big schools including Florence, Calera and Bartlett (Tenn.).

Sweet Water returns to action Friday with a doubleheader against Washington County.
