Montz, Tatum dazzling as Demopolis downs Jackson

3-15-18 — Demopolis, Ala. — Demopolis’ Kayla Montz loads up to fire a pitch against Jackson.

Demopolis bookended the game with offense, including a seven-run bottom of the sixth inning, Thursday to beat Class 5A foe Jackson 8-0. Napoleon Roberson singled in the first and scored on a Taylor Smith double for the 1-0 lead.

That advantage stood until the bottom of the sixth when Demopolis applied enough pressure to force the Aggies to crack. Elly Brown singled with one out ahead of a Kayla Montz double. Lane Braeden Burbage followed with a single to plate Brown and move the lead to 2-0.

3-15-18 — Demopolis, Ala. — Demopolis’ Kendall Hannah makes contact during the Tigers’ game against Jackson.

Natalie Tatum made it a fourth consecutive hit, driving in Montz and giving the Tigers more breathing room at 3-0. Roberson joined the party with a fourth-straight hit when she singled to drive in Burbage and make it 4-0. Kendall Hannah then doubled down the right field line to score Alex Abrams and Roberson for the 6-0 lead. Smith doubled home Hannah to push it to 7-0 before scoring on an error to cap the offense.

Jackson’s only offense came in the form of a leadoff single in the top of the sixth inning. Otherwise, Aggie hitters found Montz and Tatum to be overpowering in the circle. Montz struck out four batters over four no-hit innings for the win. Tatum struck out three over three one-hit frames for the save.
