Longhorns hold off Trojans for 10-7 win
Linden, Ala. – Marengo Academy jumped out to an 8-0 lead over the visiting Meadowview Christian Trojans and held on for a 10-7 victory Friday at Scott Park. The Longhorns took advantage of three first inning solo homeruns from Cody Cobb, Hayden Campbell and Gavin Thompson to take a 3-0 lead.
After going scoreless for the next two innings, hits by Dalton Daniels, Hunter Parker, Carson Crawford, Cobb and John Parker Brock combined with a walk to Cameron Dodd plated five more runs in the fourth. The Longhorns stretched their lead to 8-0.
The big lead seemed to bring on a bit of complacency in the Longhorns’ dugout and the Trojans took advantage by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth and four more runs in the top of the sixth to get within one run at 8-7.
However, the Longhorns rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth on hits by Cobb and Campbell and two Trojan errors to increase their lead to 10-7. The ‘Horns were able to hold the Trojans scoreless in the top of the seventh to hang on for the 10-7 win.
Cobb went 3 for 4 and added two stolen bases. Parker was 2 for 2 on two singles. Dodd and Casey Cramer were both 1 for 1. Campbell was 2 for 4. Cobb scored three runs, with Dylan Mendenhall, Campbell, Daniels, Parker, Dodd, Crawford and Cramer scoring one each.
Tate Jordan worked five innings, giving up three runs on three hits while walking four and striking out five. Trey Etheridge worked two innings in relief of Jordan and allowed four runs on two hits and one walk, while striking out six.
