Demopolis blows lead, rallies in last at-bat to beat Clarke County

After a near disastrous collapse in the bottom of the sixth, Demopolis rallied in its last at-bat for a 12-10 win over Clarke County Saturday. The sloppily-played affair saw the teams combine for 11 errors against 17 hits in the 22-run affair.

His team trailing 10-9 in the top of the seventh, Russ Logan singled to open the frame. Two batters later, Henry Overmyer walked ahead of a Davis Petrey HBP to load the bases. Charles Casper followed with a single to right that drove in Logan to tie it. Overmyer shrewdly scored on the throw to put the Tigers up 11-10. After a Hunter Thrash single with two outs elevated the DHS threat, Clarke County’s eighth error of the game allowed Casper to score an insurance run.

The Tigers needed a last at-bat rally after Clarke scratched out seven runs on three hits, four walks and an error to erase a 9-3 deficit and take a brief lead. Demopolis opened the scoring with a Casper sacrifice fly that plated DeDe Davis for the 1-0 lead.

Clarke hung three on the board in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Davis doubled in Wesley Allgood and Tyler Jones in the top of the second to tie the game.

Demopolis grabbed the lead in the top of the third when Petrey scored on a Peyton Geary grounder. Andrew Patterson followed with a two-run single to drive in Hudson Holley and Allgood for the 6-3 advantage. Patterson then scored on an error to move it to 7-3.

Demopolis added to the lead in the top of the sixth as Thrash drove in Petrey with a sacrifice fly. Holley singled to center to drive in Casper for the 9-3 Demopolis lead.

Thrash picked up the win after two-thirds of an inning of relief. Casper struck out one of the only two batters he faced for the save.

Demopolis (3-4) hosts Selma for a double-header Tuesday.
