Lady Tigers beat Neal, drop two to Baker

Demopolis (1-2) had mixed results on the first day of the 2019 season Saturday as it dropped a pair of games to Baker and defeated W.S. Neal at the Thomasville Tournament.

Baker 9, Demopolis 1

Class 7A Baker hung seven runs in the fourth inning to dispatch of Demopolis in game one Saturday. Baker held a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Caroline Larkin drew a walk, moved up on an Alex Abrams single and scored on a Weezie Hughes base hit to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Baker doubled Demopolis to death in the top of the fourth inning, stringing together four doubles and two singles to plate seven runs and put the game away.

Demopolis 5, W.S. Neal 0

The Lady Tigers got things pointed in the right direction against W.S. Neal. Ashton Moorer struck out three batters and allowed two hits over four innings for the win. Tayler Pipkins worked a scoreless inning in relief.

Bria Brown doubled in the top of the second to ignite a three-run rally. Brown scored on an error off the bat of Abby Grace Cameron to put Demopolis up 1-0. Lane Braeden Burbage and Samiya Lucas followed with back-to-back singles. Taylor Smith then singled in Larkin to move the lead to 2-0 before Burbage stole home as part of a double steal.

The Lady Tigers capped off the scoring in the top of the fifth as Hughes drew a walk before Elly Brown homered over the centerfield fence.

Baker 5, Demopolis 1

The Lady Tigers ended their day with a 5-1 loss to Baker. A three-run rally in the top of the third put Baker up 3-0. Taylor Smith tripled with two out in the home half of the inning and then scored on an error to cut the deficit to 3-1. The score stayed there until Baker used two singles and a double to plate two runs in the fifth to cap the scoring.

Demopolis is schedule to return to action Tuesday at Sweet Water with a 4 p.m. first pitch before hosting American Christian Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
