Lady Longhorns split two on opening day

The Marengo Academy Lady Longhorns (1-1) split a pair of games Friday afternoon to open their season at 1-1.

Marengo 11, Edgewood 4

The Lady Longhorns opened with an 11-4 romp over hosting Edgewood. Marengo erupted for six runs in the second inning and four in the third to spark the effort.

Trinity Wilkinson deposited the first pitch she saw in the 2019 season over the center field fence for the early 1-0 lead. After Edgewood tied the game in the home half of the first, the Marengo bats woke up in a big way.

Raegan Pritchett reached on an error before Jessi Flowers singled and Makenzie Moore walked to load the bases. A bases-loaded walk to Katey Glass plated Pritchett for the 2-1 lead. Mary Grace Sheffield hit a ball to center to score Flowers before Riley Newton repeated the feat to score Moore. Wilkinson then singled in Glass for the 5-1 advantage. Mary Kendall Glass reached on an error on a play that allowed Newton and Wilkinson to score.

Sheffield stretched the lead to 9-1 an inning later with a two-run homer to left. Two batters later, Wilkinson hit a two-run shot to right to move the lead to 11-1.

Taylor Jordan allowed one earned run over two and a third innings of work while striking out one for the win. Katey Glass worked an inning and two-thirds in relief.

Wilkinson led the offense, going 3 for 3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Sheffield drove in two and scored one. Newton drove in one and scored twice. Moore and Flowers each had a hit and scored a run. Katey Glass scored two runs.

Lee-Scott 5, Marengo 0

Marengo struggled to get the offense going in the second game of the day, falling 5-0 to Lee-Scott Academy. Wilkinson tripled while Pritchett and Moore each had a hit but the Lady Longhorns could do little against Warriors’ pitcher Julie Oas. She struck out four over four innings of work while scattering three hits and two walks for the win. The big blow in the game came in the bottom of the third when Mary Baxley Smith drilled a three-run shot that plated Sidney Lee and Alyssa Arrington for the 4-0 lead.
