Jonah Smith takes West Alabama Watchman POTY honors
Jonah Smith is a comet. Rare is the player that dominates a game so proficiently and in so many ways, yet Smith continued to strengthen an already impressive legacy in 2018. Smith’s reputation on the mound has long been established and he continued to validate that well-earned prowess throughout the season. He finished with an ERA of 0.63 while striking out 126 batters over 99 innings of work. His 14-2 is far and away tops in the county and goes along with a save in the only such opportunity he got.
But Smith got things done at the plate as well during his senior season. He led the county in batting average with a .478 total to go along with four homers, five triples, 25 doubles, 31 RBIs, 30 runs scored and 16 stolen bases.
The UAB signee leaves Sweet Water with two baseball state championship rings. In three years under coach John Gluschick, Smith has compiled a .412 batting average with 46 doubles, 13 triples, four homers, 89 RBIs, 83 runs scored, 43 stolen bases and only 27 strikeouts in 400 plate appearances. On the mound over that span, he has assembled a record of 37-8 with 4 saves and 318 strikeouts over 251 innings of work with an ERA of 0.91.
It goes without saying the Smith is the 2018 West Alabama Watchman Player of the Year.
