Demopolis drops Thomasville to win home opener

Demopolis (3-4) notched a win over one of its chief rivals Tuesday when it downed Thomasville 10-6.

The Lady Tigers held off a late surge from the visitors as Thomasville posted four runs in the seventh inning but proved unable to draw any closer.

Demopolis did the bulk of its damage when it scored eight runs in the bottom of the second inning. Elly Brown reached on an error before Bria Brown and Alex Abrams had back to back singles. Caroline Larkin drew a bases-loaded walk to put Demopolis up 1-0. Lane Braeden Burbage followed with a double to drive in Brown, Abrams and Larkin for the 4-0 lead. Tiffany McInnis singled in Burbage before being moved over herself by a Taylor Smith sacrifice bunt.

Weezie Hughes singled in McInnis to make it 6-0. Two batters later, Elly Brown stroked a homer to center for the 8-0 advantage.

Angel Howard homered for Thomasville in the third to cut it to 8-1 before Haven Collins singled in Amelia Thomas to make it 8-2.

Demopolis got back to work in the bottom of the fifth when Abrams walked and then scored on a Larkin double. McInnis then drove in Larkin with a fielder’s choice to put the Lady Tigers up 10-2.

Thomasville took advantage of a pair of Demopolis errors in the seventh before Avery Dement singled to load the bases. Kelsey Rush then doubled home Jessica Pruitt and Alexandria Newberry to cut the deficit to 10-4. Howard followed with a double that plated Dement. Thomas then singled in Howard to set the final margin.
