Broussard perfect as Sweet Water skunks Pirates

Sweet Water (7-1, 2-0) picked up its fourth and fifth wins of the week Friday night as it opened Class 1A, Area 1 play with a dominating sweep of Fruitdale.

SWEET WATER 12, FRUITDALE 2

The Bulldogs jumped on top early in the opener, hanging three runs on the board in the first inning before tacking on nine more over the next three frames.

Sasha Smith doubled to open the home half of the fifth before Jonah Smith legged out an inside-the-park home run to put Sweet Water up 2-0. Braiden Broussard then coaxed a full-count walk before stealing second and third to get into position to score on a wild pitch for the 3-0 lead.

John Thomas Etheridge singled to lead off the second and later scored on a Sasha Smith single for the 4-0 Bulldog lead.

Payton Stagner hit a solo shot for Fruitdale in the top of the third to narrow the gap to 4-1. Sweet Water quickly took command of the game in the bottom half. Broussard singled ahead of a Reid Joiner walk. Broussard stole third and scored on an error to move it to 5-1 before Luke Davis doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Joiner scored on Chance Broussard’s sacrficie fly. Etheridge singled before Brandon Schroeder’s single plated courtesy runner Chastian Washington. Shamar Lewis then singled home courtesy runner Trent Sams to put Sweet Water up 9-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jonah Smith singled and Braiden Broussard walked before Davis doubled for the 11-1 lead. Sweet Water’s final run came when Davis scored on a passed ball.

Fruitdale’s last score came when MJ Mizell drove in Stagner with a single.

Etheridge picked up the complete game win, striking out eight batters over five innings of work while scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs.

Sweet Water was relentless in game two, hanging 10 runs on the board in the first inning and riding the pitching dominance of Chance Broussard to an 11-0 win.

Broussard turned in a five-inning perfect game on only 69 pitches while striking out 11 batters for the win.

After Broussard struck out the side to open the game, Sasha Smith singled to start the Sweet Water turn at the plate. Jonah Smith followed with a triple for the 1-0 lead. Braiden Broussard then plated Jonah with a sacrifice fly to center. Joiner singled and Davis walked before the former scored on a wild pitch. Chance Broussard then singled in courtesy runner Jaland Lewis-Horton to move it to 4-0. Etheridge doubled in courtesy runner Trent Sams to make it 5-0. Chastian Washington was hit by a pitch and Lewis drew a walk to load the bases. Washington later scored on a wild pitch before Jonah Smith doubled home Lewis and Sasha Smith for the 8-0 lead. Braiden Broussard followed with a double to make it 9-0. Joiner turned it into a back-to-back trick for the 10-0 advantage. Xavier Lucy doubled home Lewis-Horton in the second for the final run of the game.
