West Alabama takes down Tuskegee
The Golden Tigers scored first and again just before the half to keep it close between Tuskegee and West Alabama. But, the Tigers from UWA got their offense on track and the defense allowed only a Golden Tiger field goal in the second half, leading to a 36-16 win for the Tigers.
West Alabama found the end zone first on Derrick Underwood’s 5-yard run. The PAT failed and the Tigers held a 6-0 lead at the 8:24 mark of the first quarter. Tuskegee responded on an Eric Bright 6-yard run with 17 seconds to go in the first quarter. The PAT gave the Golden Tigers a 7-6 lead over West Alabama.
With 13:15 to go in the second quarter, James Smith got in to the end zone for West Alabama, on a 14-yard run. Zach Gaines added the PAT and the Tigers gained a 13-7 lead. The Tigers added a safety at the 7:14 mark of the second quarter, on a bad snap into the end zone on a Tuskegee punt attempt. The safety gave West Alabama a 15-7 lead. The Golden Tigers came back and got a 1-yard scoring run from Ivonte Patterson with :25 left in the half. The PAT was unsuccessful and the first half ended with West Alabama leading Tuskegee 15-13.
The Golden Tigers took their second lead of the game at 16-15 on a field goal by Arnes Huskic with 11:16 to go in the third quarter. West Alabama regained the lead on a 1-yard run by Jack McDaniels at the 7:39 mark of the third quarter. Qua Boyd pulled in a 2-point conversion pass, giving the Tigers a 23-16 lead. With 2:41 to go in the third, McDaniels stretched the ball out over the goal line to record his second 1-yard touchdown run of the quarter. An unsuccessful PAT gave West Alabama a 29-16 lead.
The Tigers added an insurance score at the 10:19 mark of the fourth quarter, when Demetrius Battle crashed in from 5 yards out. The Gaines’ PAT was the final point of the night and gave the Tigers the 36-16 win over the Golden Tigers.
McDaniels was 20-29 for 178 yards through the air and added six carries for 43 yards with two touchdowns. Smith had 10 carries for 57 yards and one score. Underwood had 11 carries for 46 yards and one touchdown. Battle had seven carries for 23 yards and one touchdown. Bayley Blanchard led the Tigers with 5 catches for 79 yards.
Defensive leaders for the Tigers included Jordan Jones, who had five tackles and two assists. Jeremiah Boyd had six tackles, one assist and the Tigers’ first interception of the season. Dorsett Johnson had five tackles and one assist. Savon Parker added three tackles and three assists.
