Veterans honored in McHAM exhibit

Veterans of military service are honored this month with an exhibit at the Marengo County History and Archives Museum.

The military exhibit honoring veterans proved popular.

The display for November features uniforms, equipment, medals, photos and other objects from all branches of the military, almost all of them from Demopolis service men and women. When the event opened on Veteran’s Day, it proved to be one of the most popular exhibits ever sponsored by McHAM.

Kim Browder, left and Robin Dunn set up the veterans exhibit.

Kim Browder is the McHAM volunteer who set up the memorabilia along with Robin Dunn. Browder is a retired history teacher, and Dunn teaches history at Demopolis Middle School. Dunn also holds a master’s degree in public history with a focus on museums.

Browder said when the call went out for donations for the temporary exhibit, items came pouring in. She and Dunn worked on the display for about two weeks. It will remain for museum visitors until Thanksgiving.

Kim Browder explains to Broughton Rogers some of the items from Adm. Bryan W. Compton which are part of a permanent display at McHAM.

Some of the things in the exhibit had been on permanent display in a space at the rear of the museum but were moved to the front for the event. Because they are unique, the decision was made to keep the permanent items close to the entrance where visitors can enjoy them.
