UMW gearing up for annual bazaar

Sometime around 65 years ago, the women of the First United Methodist Church in Demopolis decided to hold a bazaar to benefit their missions.

Now the annual UMW Bazaar is a much anticipated event each year on the second Wednesday of November. For the 2019 version, Claire Cole and Renee Robbins are heading up the bazaar Nov. 13.

UMW members working the annual bazaar are, from left, front, Carolyn Bell, Claire Cole, Debbie Butler, Eleanor Park; middle, Renee Robbins, Martha Sampson, Becky Jordan, Kayte Melton, Cheryl Newell; back: Joyce Kerby, Mary Beth Freeman, Margie Williams, Iona Watts, Catherine Ferguson, Vickie Wilson.

Doors open at 10 a.m., and many of the shoppers head directly for the Bake Room. Not only are cakes, pies, cookies, breads and other treats available, but frozen casseroles and soups can be purchased.

Co-chair Cole said the Silent Auction will feature specialty items donated by local businesses. This year it also will include an afghan crocheted by Brenda Miller.

A drawing will be held for a smoker grill, a change from years past when the afghan was offered.

In Attic Treasures, Cole said, items donated by church members will be for sale. Attic Treasures is expected to be especially full of bargains this year since items from families who have moved away are included.

The popular chicken salad lunch will be served beginning at 11 a.m. for $8 per plate. Diners can eat in or they can order ahead to take out by calling 289-1933.

Cole and Robbins have been members of the UMW for only a few years. Cole said their job as co-chairs has been possible because of those who have worked the bazaar before.

“One thing that makes our job easier is that these women have been doing this for years,” she said.
