Tigers Baseball drops Pelham, 7-2

The Demopolis Tigers baseball team hosted the Pelham Panthers in the first game of a double header for the Tigers Saturday. Hayes Atkins started on the mound and picked up the win. Jim Lawler and Coleman Fuqua picked up two hits each to lead the Tigers at the plate. The Tigers collected a total of eight hits in the 7-2 win over the Panthers.

The Tigers held the Panthers scoreless in the top of the first and put three runs on the board in the bottom of the inning. Price Smith led off with a single and scored on a errant throw to third when Lawler singled to center. Lawler advanced to second on the throw. Vincent Deas then drew a walk. Lawler and Deas advanced to third and second, respectively, on a passed ball. Lawler scored and Deas advanced to third when Atkins grounded out to second. Deas scored the third run of the inning when Chandler King reached on a error by the Panthers’ shortstop, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

2-27-2021 – Demopolis, Ala. — Demopolis’ Price Smith leads off the bottom of the first inning with a hit during the Tigers’ 7-2 win over the Pelham Panthers.

In the bottom of the second, Fuqua got on with a single to center and advanced to third on a fielding error. Price sacrificed to center to allow Fuqua to cross the plate, increasing the Tiger lead to 4-0.

The Panthers got on the board in the top of the fifth inning by way of a Tiger fielding error, an errant pickoff attempt and a double. The Tigers answered the run by the Panthers with two runs of their own. Lawler doubled and Drew Seymore came in to run. Deas then doubled to center and Seymore advanced to third. Atkins singled to right field to score Seymore and Deas. The Tigers held a 6-1 lead at the conclusion of the fifth inning.

Fuqua scored the Tigers final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth after getting a single then advancing to third on a Panther error, then scoring on a passed ball, giving the Tigers a 7-1 lead. The Panthers added a run in the top of the seventh inning, for the final score of 7-2, in favor of the Tigers.

Joining Lawler and Fuqua in the hit column were Joseph Gantt, Smith, Atkins, and Deas with one hit each. Atkins totaled three RBIs and Smith was credited with one RBI. Deas and Fuqua scored two runs each, with Smith, Lawler and Seymore scoring once each.

Atkins worked six innings, collecting 12 strikeouts while giving up three walks, three hits and no earned runs. Lawler worked one inning, collecting two strikeouts while giving up three hits and one earned run.
