Tigers baseball drops doubleheader to Sipsey Valley, 7-5, 13-5

In the first game of a double header with Sipsey Valley, the Demopolis Tigers fell 7-5. The Tigers scored three in the bottom of the second inning, only to see the visiting Bears score four in the top of the third for a 4-3 lead. The Bears added another run in the top of the fourth and then two in the top of the seventh. The Tigers made a valiant effort at a comeback win, but scored only two in the bottom of the seventh, coming up two runs short for a final score of 7-5 in favor of the Bears.

The Tigers collected nine hits in the loss. Jimbo Lawler, Mac Logan and Hayes Atkins notched two hits each, with Price Smith, Kevin McElroy and Vincent Deas getting one hit each. Joseph Gantt, Jacob Davis, Smith, McElroy and Coleman Fuqua scored the Tigers’ five runs.

Lawler pitched 2.1 innings, collecting three strikeouts while giving up four walks, one hit and four runs. McElroy worked 3.2 innings, collecting five strikeouts while giving up one walk, five hits and three runs. Vincent Deas faced three batters, striking out one and giving up one hit. Drew Seymore faced four batters, giving up two hits and one walk.

In game two, the Tigers found themselves down 10-2 after three full innings and were unable to gain much ground after. The Tigers managed to score three in the bottom of the sixth, but the Bears plated three in the last two innings for the 13-5 final.

The Tigers managed six hits in the second game. Atkins and Fuqua collected two hits each, with Lawler and Chandler King getting in the book with one hit each. Lawler, Charlie Singleton, Atkins, Mac Bradley and Fuqua accounted for the five Tiger runs.

Gantt, Jay Holley, Josh Holley, Bradley and Fuqua all saw time on the mound. The five hurlers combined to strike out six, walking 10 batters and gave up 10 hits. The Tigers pitching staff gave up a total of eight earned runs, while six Tiger errors contributed to an additional five unearned runs for the Bears.
