Thrash walk-off double saves Tigers’ tails in win over Clarke

Hunter Thrash created a memory Friday night that he and his teammates will likely remember for years to come in an 11-10 walk-off victory over Clarke County. With the bases loaded, two out and Demopolis down 10-9, Thrash ripped a 1-2 pitch over the head of the Bulldog center fielder for a double that scored Andrew Patterson and Davis Petrey for the 11-10 win.

Demopolis entered the inning down 10-7. Henry Overmyer and Peyton Geary drew back-to-back walks to start the rally. Petrey’s two-out single to right kept the game alive and drove in Overmyer and DeDe Davis to cut it to 10-9. An intentional walk to Charles Casper set the stage for Thrash’s heroics.

Demopolis opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Petrey singled in Davis and Hudson Holley’s single drove in Petrey for the 2-0 lead.

A disastrous second inning soon put Demopolis in a seemingly insurmountable hole. Seven walks and three errors allowed the Bulldogs to score nine runs without the benefit of a hit.

Demopolis began chipping away at the lead in the bottom of the third with a solo home run from Casper. Tyler Jones hit a sacrifice fly to score Holley before Davis doubled to center to drive in Overmyer and Russ Logan, cutting the deficit to 9-6.

Holley narrowed it to 9-7 in the fourth when his RBI fielder’s choice plated Petrey. Clarke added a run in the top of the sixth to stretch it lead to 10-7.

Adrew Fuqua did yeoman’s work in relief, striking out seven batters over four innings while scattering three hits and allowing one unearned run to qualify for the win.

Demopolis (16-5) is set to close the regular season Tuesday when it hosts Sweet Water.
