Thomas Smith

Thomas Bass Smith died at his home in North Sumter County, Alabama on February 25, 2014. He was born in Livingston, Alabama on May 22, 1917 to Dr. Hadden Bass Smith and Janie Bradshaw Smith. He attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, where he received a B.S. degree in 1939. Subsequently he worked in Camden, Alabama for the Farm Security Administration. During World War II he joined the Army Air Force and served as a bomber pilot with the Ninth Air Force in Europe. He participated in three campaigns and received, among other medals, the Distinguished Flying Cross. He returned to Sumter County after the war and worked as a dairy farmer and cattleman. As a young man and well past middle age, he was an enthusiastic bird hunter and dog trainer. He played softball with a local league, and he also helped to found and coach a team for boys who were too young to play Little League. He was a life member of First Presbyterian Church in Livingston. He served the church as Sunday School Superintendent, choir member, deacon, elder, and clerk of the session. In 1992 he was made elder emeritus. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Martha McGregor Mitchell Smith, son Thomas B. Smith, Jr. and wife Sue, daughter Winston Smith Roswell and husband Terry, daughter Jane Smith Wooldridge and husband Britt. Also, two grandchildren, Thomas B. Smith, III and wife Katie, and Annie Smith Larkin and husband Jimmy and two great grandsons, Thomas B. Smith, IV and Winston Augustus Smith. Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Livingston on February 27, 2014 at 10:00 am with Reverend Barrett Abernathy and the Reverend Patsy Chaney officiating. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Gainesville, Alabama. Pallbearers will be L. R. Smith, Jr., Hadden Smith, III, J. B. Smith, Jr., L. R. Smith, III, Jack Smith, Cullen Smith, David Neel, Jr. and Hadden Smith, IV. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be given to First Presbyterian Church, Comfort Care Hospice, or the charity of your choice. Arrangements by O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home in Linden, AL.
