Sweet Water season ends with loss at Maplesville

Sweet Water’s season came to a halt Friday night in the first round of the AHSAA, Class 1A playoffs as Maplesville scored 21 unanswered points for a 35-12 victory.

While Sweet Water had grind-it-out drives early, Mpalesville exploited the Bulldog defense with chunk plays. Jackson Abbott scored on a 56-yard run late in the first quarter for the 7-0 lead. Jacory Brown capped a lengthy SWHS drive with a 2-yard scoring run to cut it to 7-6. Undaunted, Abbott hit Ryan Morrow for a 66-yard strike to move the lead to 14-6.

Sweet Water showed off its own big play ability on the next play as Antonio Sullivan scored on a 78-yard kickoff return to narrow the gap to 14-12.

Maplesville responded with a touchdown before intermission and two more in the second half to ice the win.

The Red Devils tallied 310 yards of total offense with Sweet Water had 199. Jaylin Dixon paced SWHS with 56 yards on 15 carries. Christin Brown headed up the Maplesville attack with 82 yards on 17 rushes.

Sweet Water ends its season at 6-5.
