UPDATED: DA Griggers injured in Demopolis shooting

11-15-18 — Demopolis, Ala. — District Attorney Greg Griggers vehicle sits on the street in downtown Demopolis after a shooting into Griggers’ vehicle.

4:30 p.m.

Capt. Jason Roberts with the State Bureau of Investigation held a press conference outside the district attorney’s office. Roberts stated that Griggers’ “vehicle was fired upon in an ambush style shooting” after returning from lunch. The suspect, who was killed at the scene, was identified as Steven Smith, Jr., a former state trooper with the Alabama Department of Public Safety. Smith was hired in February 1982 and was fired in 1996. Roberts stated that Griggers “was transported to the hospital and has been released with minor injuries.” Regarding the investigation and possible motives, Roberts indicated that the investigation was still in its early stages.

Greg Griggers, district attorney for the 17th Judicial Circuit, was injured when he was approached and shot at in downtown Demopolis Thursday afternoon. The extent and nature of Griggers’ injuries are unclear at this time.

The unknown suspect was killed when fire was returned. It is unclear at this time who returned fire killing the suspect.
