Sweet Water errors lead to first loss of season

Sweet Water kicked it around a bit Saturday and fell into an early hole on the way to its first loss of the season, a 6-5 defeat at the hands of Clarke County.

Clarke County doubled in a run in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Sweet Water fired back in the home half of the frame as Sasha Smith hit a leadoff triple and scored on Braiden Broussard’s RBI grounder to short to tie the game.

The error bug bit in the top of the second as a pair of miscues augmented Clarke County’s five-hit inning and CCHS posted five runs in the frame for the 6-1 lead.

Sweet Water started to chip away at that lead in the bottom of the third when Broussard drew a two-out walk in front of a Will Huckabee single. The duo then scored on a Jonah Smith single to cut the lead to 6-3. Chase Joiner followed with a double to drive in Jonah Smith, cutting the deficit to 6-4.

Luke Davis started the home half of the fourth with a single but found himself standing on third base with two away. Sasha Smith hit a grounder that was too much for the Clarke infield, allowing Davis to score and cut it to 6-5.

Despite a pair of singles in the bottom of the seventh, Sweet Water proved unable to push the tying run across, suffering its first loss of the season.

Sweet Water (10-1) is set to host Demopolis Friday at 6 p.m.
