Storm spares Demopolis

Demopolis dodged a bullet Monday night when a heavy line of thunderstorms, high winds and tornadoes went through the area.

While no major injuries occurred, Demopolis Fire and Rescue joined with other area agencies to assist in the search and rescue for three residents in the Saltwell area when their house trailer overturned. Two were uninjured, but one was transported to Whitfield Regional Hospital for treatment, said Fire Chief Keith Murray.

An overturned tractor-trailer traveling west on U.S. Hwy. 80 overturned. The driver had minor injuries and was treated at the fire station, Murray said.

Several homes in the area sustained damage, and one observer saw a trampoline that had been blown into a tree.

Collections of clothing and money are being made for the family of one Demopolis High School student whose home was destroyed. Anyone wishing to help may call Coach Brandy Dannelly or assistant principal Virginia Goodlett for more information.

Fire and rescue personnel stopped the Canebrake Players production of “The Sanders Family Christmas.” Cast, crew and audience went to the basement for an impromptu tornado party until the threat of tornadoes had passed, and the play resumed.
