Scouts tell of Philmont trek

Rotary president Ashley Coplin presents a check to Boy Scouts Cooper Smith and Michael Reynolds and Scout Leader Pat Smith.

Michael Reynolds and Cooper Smith related their experiences camping and hiking in Philmont, N.M., this summer to the Demopolis Rotary Club at its meeting Wednesday.

Michael and Cooper are members of Boy Scouts Troop 41. They and other Scouts from Alabama and their leaders took the 12-day wilderness hike at the Boys Scouts of America’s largest National High Adventure Base. Located at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, Philmont boasts more than 220 square miles (140,000 acres) and 315 miles of trails with 770 total camp sites.

It takes two years before a Scout can embark on this type of experience. The total trek was 85 miles with the longest hike being 14 miles.

Part of the Scouts’ journey included braving a hail storm and having to be in a lighting position (heels together in a crouched position) for 45 minutes due to inclement weather.

The Club enjoyed Michael and Cooper’s presentation, as well as their humor in explaining their trip. The Club presented their local troop with a donation in appreciation for all they do.
