School tax renewal easily passes

Voters in Demopolis overwhelmingly passed the two 5 mill school tax renewals on Tuesday.

The final tally was 406-33 for the Demopolis city tax and 407-33 for the Marengo County tax. Both taxes are exclusively for the benefit of Demopolis schools.

The two property taxes have been on the books since 1955 and need to be renewed by voters periodically. Supt. Tony Willis estimates the combined taxes bring in about $1.5 million annually for the Demopolis City Schools system.

An agreement between the city and county made it possible for voters to go to one location — the Demopolis Civic Center — to cast their votes.
