Sasha Smith struck out eight batters over seven shutout innings to beat Leroy Monday.

Sasha Smith pitched around potential catastrophe in the first inning Monday to hold down Class 2A power Leroy and propel Sweet Water to a 1-0 victory.

After Solomon Foster opened the game with a leadoff double, back-to-back errors loaded the bases. Smith dug in and forced an infield fly ahead of a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the inning unscathed.

Smith pitched around an error in the second inning and a double in the third to keep the game scoreless.

Jonah Smith helped Sweet Water break through in the bottom of the fourth with a one-out single. He stole second and and scored on an error for the 1-0 lead.

That proved to be enough for Sasha Smith as the Bulldogs’ sophomore hurler allowed only two more Bear runners to reach base. Smith finished the game with eight strikeouts while allowing only two hits and no walks during his complete game shutout.

Sweet Water (15-8) hosts Demopolis Tuesday night.
