Marengo upends Sweet Water for first time since 2002

Marengo High scored 19 unanswered points to nab one of the biggest wins of the Eberne Myrthil era Friday, downing Sweet Water 19-12.

Jacory Brown scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 8:05 left in the opening quarter to put Sweet Water up. Marengo blocked the extra point to keep the deficit at 6-0.

Brown struck again with 5:27 remaining in the frame when he sprinted in from 16 yards out for the 12-0 lead. The Bulldogs went for the conversion run but failed to convert.

The Panthers wasted little time getting back into it. Phelix Hosea scored from a yard out with 4:36 to go in the frame. Roosevelt Thompson added the extra point kick to cut it to 12-7. With only seven seconds remaining in the quarter, Thompson scored from 11 yards away to put Marengo up before Sweet Water blocked the kick to keep it 13-12.

The scored stayed there until Alphonzo Lewis punched it in from a yard out with 4:02 left in the third quarter to cap the scoring.

Marengo held Sweet Water to 184 yards of total offense while turning in 328 yards of its own. The Panther defense also forced one turnover in the game while the Bulldogs forced two.

Lewis led Marengo with 96 yards rushing on 16 carries. Keshawn Fountain added 86 yards on eight runs. Jaylin Dixon paced Sweet Water with 73 yards on eight runs.

The victory marks the first win Marengo has notched over Sweet Water since 2002.

Marengo (7-1, 4-1) is one win away from locking in the No. 2 seed in Class 1A, Region 1. Sweet Water (3-4, 2-2) is tied with Millry for the No. 3 seed. Marengo hosts McIntosh next week. Sweet Water travels to J.F. Shields.
