Marengo High’s Alesia Bowser receives a commemorative mini-basketball from West Alabama Watchman managing partner Jeremy D. Smith for being named the WAW Player of the Year.

She may be the most under appreciated player in west Alabama, let alone Marengo County. At 5-7, Alesia Bowser has played bigger than her stature for her entire varsity career.

And during her senior season, her big time game led her to lead Marengo County in three of the five major statistical categories.

While fueling her Marengo High Lady Panther squad to a 10-8 season, Bowser averaged 19 points, 13.2 rebounds and four steals per game. No other player averaged more than 16 points, 12 rebounds or three steals over the course of the season.

And, to show herself an entirely well-rounded performer, Bowser had 1.4 assists and 1.1 blocks per game.

The numbers were plenty of reason for Bowser to hoist this year’s West Alabama Watchman Player of the Year award. However, appreciating Bowser’s game means going beyond the numbers.

Bowser possesses tremendous leadership ability and a fantastic work ethic. But she plays the game with an unrivaled ferocity and couples that aggressiveness with tremendous fluidity.

It is that combination of intangibles that allows her to be a go-to scorer in the post and a dominant rebounder despite being undersized for the position.

But, the truth is, that Alesia Bowser is not undersized for anything. She has put together a tremendous varsity career with nothing short of maximum effort. And, if she so chooses, Bowser will get the opportunity to play collegiately based off that same level of commitment.

Congratulations to our 2014 West Alabama Watchman Girls Basketball Player of the Year, Alesia Bowser.
