Demopolis leaves bases loaded in 7-6 loss to Thomasville

Demopolis left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday, falling to 4-8 with a 7-6 loss to Thomasville.

The Tigers got Stephen Stewart on with the benefit of an error to open the seventh inning. After a pair of strikeouts, Tyler Oates reached on a two-base error that left a pair of runners in scoring position. After an intentional walk to Michael Brooker to load the bases, the Tigers could muster no more as the final batter of the game struck out.

“I am disappointed that we could not find a way to finish the game,” Demopolis coach James Moody said. “We lead off the seventh with our nine-hole hitter getting on base and just could not find a way to get it done.”

Thomasville took the lead in the sixth inning with a three-run rally. Jacobs Brewer reached on an infield single, Adrian Malone was hit by a pitch and Aubrey Thompson dropped down a bunt single to load the bases. A walk to Dana Lockhart forced Brewer across to cut the Demopolis lead to 6-5. Jacob Brasell hit a RBI single to plate Malone and tie the game at 6. Lockhart scored the eventual game-winner on a passed ball.

“We couldn’t control their running game,” Moody said of Thomasville. “When you give a team like that the opportunity with those guys that can run, it becomes a dboule instead of a walk and a single.”

Thomasville, which trailed 6-2 after four innings, began to fight back into the game with a two-run fifth. Lockhart reached on an error, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kenney Jackson reached on a RBI grounder that plated Lockhart. Desmond Pritchett plated Jackson with a RBI sacrifice fly to center that cut the Thomasville deficit to 6-4.

Thomasville opened the scoring in the first when Jackson walked and scored on a Brasell RBI single. Pritchett then singled to plate Brasell for the 2-0 lead.

Demopolis fought back in the home half of the first when Matt Eicher walked and came around to score on a Michael Brooker RBI single.

Demopolis took the lead in the third with a two-run rally. Eicher singled and moved to third on a Seth Aiken infield single. Oates hit a RBI grounder to score Eicher and tie the game at two. John Anthony Morrison singled home Aiken to give Demopolis a 3-2 lead.

Demopolis posted three runs in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. Tripp Perry singled and scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Eicher. Jacob Rodrigues reached on an infield single and scored on a RBI single by Tyler Oates. Stewart walked and gave way to courtesy runner Wesley Dunn, who scored on a bases-loaded RBI walk by Morrison.

Despite the middle-innings sizzle, Demopolis fizzled down the stretch, stranding eight runners over the game’s last three innings.

Demopolis is set to play again Friday when it travels to Cordova for a double-header.
