Longhorns split with Wildcats

The Marengo Academy Longhorn baseball team split a double header with the Wilcox Academy Wildcats on Saturday. The Wilcats got took the first game 7-4 and the Longhorns held on for a 10-9 win in the second game.

Game 1

The visiting Wildcats got one run in the top of the first and the Longhorns added a run in the bottom of the second. The Wildcats plated five runs in the top of the fifth and the Longhorns added three in the bottom of the sixth. Wilcox would add one more run in the top of the seventh and hold the Longhorns in the bottom of the inning, resulting in the 7-4 final.

John Parker Brock started for the Longhorns in game one and went 4-2/3 innings with six strikeouts and five walks. Dylan Mendenhall came in for 2-1/3 innings of relief.

Brock, Hayden Campbell, Will Turberville, Trey Etheridge and Conner Edmonds picked up one hit each. Dylan Thompson collected two hits. Thompson, Casey Cramer, Mason Glass and Edmonds crossed the plate for the Longhorns. Brock and Etheridge picked up one RBI each.

Both teams committed five errors in the game. The Wildcats left six on base and the Longhorns left 12 on base.

Game 2

Game two saw the Longhorns jump out to a 9-3 lead by the end of the third inning and hold off the Wildcats for the 10-9 win. The Longhorns plated three in the first, four in the second and two in the third inning. The Wildcats got two in the second and one in the third inning before scoring four in the fourth and adding one in the fifth to make the pull within one run. The Wildcats then tied the game at 9-9 with one run in the top of the seventh. The Longhorns would get the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to hang on for the 10-9 win.

Campbell went 3-1/3 innings with five strikeouts and five walks. Tate Jordan went 2-2/3 innings with one strikeout and four walks. Mendenhall covered one inning with two strikeouts and one walk.

Campbell and Cramer led the Longhorns with two hits each, with one of Campbell’s clearing the fence. Mendenhall, Turberville, Thompson and Jordan got one hit each. Mendenhall, Thompson and Glass crossed the place twice for the Longhorns. Brock, Campbell, Edmonds and Kristofer Harvell scored one run each. Campbell, Turberville and Cramer drove in two runs each. Mendenhall, Etheridge and Edmonds had one RBI each.

The Longhorns committed six errors to the Wildcats’ three errors in the game. The Wildcats left 11 on base, while the Longhorns stranded seven.
