Lady Longhorns move to 14-6 on season

Marengo Academy (14-6) has largely continued its hot streak over the last two weeks. The Lady Longhorns have won five of their last seven games including a three-game sweep of Wilcox Academy.

MARENGO 7, WILCOX 2

The Lady Longhorns strung together 10 hits to beat Wilcox 7-2 Tuesday, March 12 in the opener of a three-game set. Riley Newton and Mary Grace Sheffield singled in to open the bottom of the first before scoring on Mary Kendall Glass’s single for the 2-0 lead. After Wilcox tied the game with a homer in the top of the second, Taylor Jordan tripled and scored in the third to put Marengo back on top. Glass scored on an error later in the inning to move the lead to 4-2. Trinity Wilkinson homered in the bottom of the fourth for the 5-2 advantage. The Lady Longhorns stretched the lead again in the sixth when Newton singled before scoring on Sheffield’s single. Jordan then dropped down a sacrifice that plated Sheffield for the final margin.

Katey Glass notched the win in a complete game effort in which she struck out four while scattering four hits and a walk.

MARENGO 5, WILCOX 2

Marengo kept the bats going Wednesday, March 13 when it traveled to Camden for a doubleheader, taking game one in a nine-hit performance.

Wilcox scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the second when it took advantage of a Lady Longhorn error. Another miscue in the third put Marengo down 2-0.

The Lady Longhorns manufactured a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Wilkinson drew a walk and scored on a Raegan Pritchett sacrifice fly. Sheffield singled and scored on Jordan’s sacrifice fly, tying the game 2-2.

Marengo took the lead in the sixth. After Wilkinson roped a one-out double to left, Sheffield drove her in with a single.

Katey Glass tripled with two away in the seventh to ignite another rally. Newton followed with a double to push the lead to 4-2. Sheffield later singled in Newton for the 5-2 lead.

Wilkinson put Wilcox away 1-2-3 in the seventh to seal the win. She worked a complete game effort, striking out five while allowing three hits, four walks and no earned runs.

MARENGO 11, WILCOX 1

After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning of the series finale, Marengo erupted for 11 runs over three frames to ice the sweep.

Katey Glass, Wilkinson and Sheffield each singled to load the bases with one out in the third. Pritchett plated courtesy runner Brianna Lucas with a fielder’s choice to tie the game 1-1. Jordan singled in Sheffield for the 2-1 lead before Mary Kendall Glass doubled to push it to 4-1.

The Lady Longhorns staged another two-out rally in the fourth when Newton singled ahead of a Wilkinson walk. Pritchett singled both runners in for the 6-1 lead.

Yet another two-out rally in the fifth spelled doom for Wilcox. Jessi Flowers and Katey Glass singled with two away before Newton’s double made it 7-1. Sheffield singled in two for the 9-1 lead. Pritchett followed with a double to set the final margin at 11-1.

Katey Glass got the win after striking out three over five innings of work and limiting Wilcox to three hits.

MARENGO 4, HOOPER 1

Marengo continued then traveled to the Macon-East Montgomery tournament over the weekend and went 2-2 in the draw. The Lady Longhorns opened play Friday morning with a 4-1 victory over Hooper Academy.

Sheffield homered to lead off the game. After Hooper tied it in the bottom of the first, Wilkinson put her team back on top in the second when she doubled in Katey Glass. Wilkinson added the decisive stroke of the game in the top of the fourth when she went yard on a two-run shot after a Newton single.

Wilkinson allowed one hit and three walks while striking out six over five innings of work to get the win.

MACON-EAST 17, MARENGO 7

In the final game of the day Friday, Marengo surrendered eight runs in the first and six more in the second against Macon-East on the way to a 17-7 loss.

Newton doubled twice in the effort while Pritchett and Wilkinson each doubled once. Sheffield and Wilkinson scored two runs apiece. Newton, Pritchett and Katey Glass each scored once.

Netwon collected three RBIs. Wilkinson, Mary Kendall Glass and Makenzie Moore drove in one run each.

MARENGO 3, CLARKE PREP 1

The Lady Longhorns started their Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Clarke Prep. After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning, Marengo rallied for a three spot in the home half of the fifth for the victory.

Katey Glass opened the fifth with a double before Sheffield followed suit with a double of her own to tie the game 1-1. Newton drove in Sheffield with a grounder to second for the 2-1 advantage before Wilkinson hit a solo shot to cap the scoring.

EDGEWOOD 9, MARENGO ACADEMY 0

Marengo’s tournament run ended unceremoniously Saturday night with a 9-0 loss to Edgewood. Riley Newton’s single was the lone Lady Longhorn hit in an error-filled performance that saw Edgewood score five in the first inning and never look back.

MARENGO 2, SOUTH CHOCTAW 0

The bitterness of Saturday’s end did not linger long for the Lady Longhorns as they traveled to South Choctaw and scored a 2-0 victory Monday.

Wilkinson hit her seventh homer of the season with two out in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. The score stayed there until the top of the fifth when Sheffield doubled in Mary Kendall Glass.

Wilkinson got the win in the circle, striking out five batters and allowing only two hits and a walk.
