Lady Tigers bash four homers in 15-0 rout of Dallas County

Demopolis continued its early season dominance in its home-opener Thursday, shelling Class 5A, Area 7 foe Dallas County 15-0 in three innings. The Lady Tigers all but broke the scoreboard in the first inning as they put together 10 runs on nine hits including three home runs.

“They’ve just been very patient with finding their favorite pitch, finding something in the zone that they can really sit back and drive,” Demopolis coach Brittany Dunson said. “That’s what we practice every single day.”

Abbey Latham doubled home Courtney Smith and Elly Brown to put Demopolis up 2-0. Bria Brown then hits a two-run homer to plate Latham. Kayla Montz made it a back-to-back affair with a homer of her own to move the advantage to 5-0. Napoleon Roberson and Taylor Smith then scored on a Courtney Smith double to move it to 7-0. Elly Brown traded places with Courtney Smith with a double of her own to make it 8-0. Latham then stroked a two-run shot to put Demopolis up 10-0.

Kendall Hannah scored the first of four Tiger runs in the second inning when Taylor Smith singled. Alex Abrams then scored on a Courtney Smith RBI fielder’s choice. Elly Brown followed by doubling home Roberson and Taylor Smith for the 14-0 lead.

Hannah showed mercy in the third inning by stroking a leadoff homer to end the game at 15-0.

“They’ve been playing together since they’ve been in about the seventh or eighth grade. They know each other’s ins and outs. They know each other really well. I’ve gotten to know them pretty well too, only being here for two years,” Dunson said of the chemistry her team has displayed in the season’s first week. “But I feel they’re almost like sisters. They’re almost like family. They’re very tightknit and they’re always there for each other. They’re great.”

Hannah (2-0) recorded five strikeouts on 36 pitches over three perfect innings of work for the victory. The outing gives her two no-hitters on the season.

Through the first seven games of the season, Demopolis has outscored opponents 77-0 while batting a robust .510 as a team to go along with 15 homers from five different players.

Demopolis (7-0, 1-0) faces Class 7A Baker Friday night as part of a tournament in Thomasville.

“That’s good competition. They know that they’re just going to come out and play the best softball that they can,” Dunson said. “They’re not playing an opponent. They’re just going to play ball.”
