Lady Tiger hurlers combine for 13 strikeouts in win over Selma

20140319 DHS vs Selma-7631Demopolis (6-14, 2-0) snagged its second area win of the season Wednesday with an 11-1 victory over Selma.

20140319 DHS vs Selma-7423Eighth grader Kendall Hannah got the win in the circle for Demopolis, working four scoreless innings, striking out eight, walking none and surrendering just one hit.

After a shaky first inning in which she gave up a single to Shaquira Livington and plunked Breonda Hall, Hannah settled in to retire 10 straight batters, striking out seven of them.

Eighth grader Natalie Tatum entered the game in the fifth and struck out five of the seven batters she faced. She issued a walk to Ayana Moore, who stole second base and came around to score Selma’s lone run on a two-base throwing error.

“I’m looking for us to get better,” Demopolis coach Joey Browder said of his expectations for his team entering Wednesday’s contest. “I’m looking for us, everyday, to work on us and try and get better. I think we’ve got a group that is buying into what we’re trying to do and is trying to get better.”

Demopolis opened the scoring in the first inning when Anna Caroline Logan hit a RBI single that scored Courtney Smith, who reached on an error.

20140319 DHS vs Selma-7557The Lady Tigers hung three on the board in the second. Jessica Adams and Riley King each walked before scoring on a two-RBI double by Abbey Latham. Logan followed with a RBI single to score Latham.

Demopolis added two more runs in the third as Adams scored on a Logan hit-by-pitch and Cameron Thomason singled before later scoring on a wild pitch.

Despite the offensive output, Demopolis struggled with runners aboard for much of the evening, stranding 14 through the first five innings of the game.

The Lady Tigers broke through in the sixth with a five-run rally to end the game. King drew her third walk of the night and later became Logan’s fourth RBI of the game when she scored on a sacrifice fly by the Demopolis second baseman.

Hanna Malone reached on a hit-by-pitch and made her way home thanks to a trio of wild pitches.

Jade Montgomery reached on an error and scored on a RBI single by Thomason.

Latham finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Logan finished 2-for-2 with four RBIs, a walk and a stolen base. Jessica Adams walked twice and was hit by a pitch three times.

Montgomery finished 2-for-5 with a double, a single and a stolen base. Thomason went 3-for-5 with one RBI.

The Lady Tigers are set to host Sweet Water Thursday at 4 p.m.
