Lady Longhorns move to 17-8 on season

Marengo Academy (17-8) followed up a 2-2 weekend at the Southern Academy tournament with a 7-4 home win over North River Christian Monday.

MARENGO ACADEMY 7, NORTH RIVER CHRISTIAN 4

The Lady Longhorns got five and two-thirds strong relief innings from Katey Glass to get the win over North River Christian. Glass fanned five batters while allowing one hit and one run.

Marengo broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the fifth when Riley Newton scored on an error. Later in the inning, Trinity Wilkinson scored on a passed ball for the 6-4 advantage. Mary Grace Sheffield drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the sixth to force home Makenzie Moore to set the final margin.

Marengo opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Taylor Jordan singled home Newton and Sheffield. Newton stroked a two-run homer in the second to move the lead to 4-0 before North River hung a four-spot in the home half of the inning to tie the game.

CLARKE PREP 5, MARENGO 2

Marengo found itself behind 5-0 against Clarke Prep in game one of the Southern Academy tournament Friday before it rallied to put something on the board.

The lone offensive output came in the bottom of the fourth when Newton scored on an error and Reagan Pritchett singled home Wilkinson.

MARENGO 12, MORGAN 0

The Lady Longhorns did not let the loss linger, hanging seven runs on Morgan in the second inning to run away with a 12-0 victory Friday night.

Jordan handled the pitching duties in the game, striking out five batters over four innings of work while allowing just two hits and one walk.

All 14 Marengo hits in the game were singles including three from Jordan and two each from Sheffield, Wilkinson and Mary Kendall Glass.

Newton singled, drove in a run and scored once. Sheffield drove in three runs and scored two. Wilkinson had one RBI and three runs scored. Pritchett had a hit and one RBI. Mary Kendall Glass drove in a run while Katey Glass and Jessi Flowers each scored one. Moore drove in two runs and scored one. Brianna Lucas and Sierra Ratcliff scored a run each.

PICKENS 7, MARENGO 0

Marengo proved unable to solve Pickens in its first game Saturday. Sheffield had a double and Katey Glass tripled but the Lady Longhorns proved unable to push a run across. Sheffield had two hits while Moore and Katey Glass had one each.

MARENGO 4, MONROE 2

The Lady Longhorns wrapped the tournament Saturday with a 4-2 win over Monroe. Marengo broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the fourth when Sheffield singled in Lucas. The top of the sixth saw Lucas score on an error for the 4-2 lead.

Marengo opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Five straight singles produced two runs. Jordan singled in Newton for the 1-0 lead. Pritchett then singled in Wilkinson for a 2-0 advantage.

Wilkinson worked six innings and allowed one earned run while striking out four for the win.
