Heart of the order helps Demopolis trounce Selma

3-13-18 — Demopolis, Ala. — Demopolis’ starting pitcher, Jim Lawler, fires to the plate during the Tigers’ game against Selma.

Demopolis scored in every inning Tuesday, working around a handful of miscues to beat Selma 12-3.

The Tigers got the first run of the day when DeDe Davis doubled to left and scored on Andrew Patterson’s single to center. The Tigers used singles by Davis Petrey and Charles Casper to load the bases but failed to score another run in the frame.

3-13-18 — Demopolis, Ala. — Demopolis’ Demetrius Davis leads off with a double down the line in the Tigers’ game against Selma.

Demopolis scored again in the bottom of the second when Davis singled and then made it home on an error to make it 2-0. Selma scored without the benefit of a hit in the top of the third to narrow it to 2-1.

Casper singled to lead off the third and advanced to third on an error before scoring on a Hunter Thrash fly ball. Casper dealt the big blow of the game in the bottom of the fourth when he launched a three-run shot over the fence in left-center to stretch it to 6-1.

Selma scratched out two more runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-3 before Demopolis rallied for four runs with two outs in the home half of the frame. Davis singled ahead of a Patterson walk. Petrey followed with a two-run triple to make it 8-3. Thrash later singled in Petrey and Casper to set the advantage at 10-3. Demopolis capped the scoring in the sixth as Russ Logan walked and later scored on a balk. Tyler Jones legged out an infield single and scored on a Patterson sacrifice fly.

Casper and Thrash finished with three RBIs apiece while Petrey and Patterson each had two. Jimbo Lawler struck out four batters over two innings of work while allowing just one hit and no runs. Patterson struck out five over four innings of work while allowing one hit and three unearned runs. Wesley Allgood pitched a scoreless inning to close it.

Demopolis (4-4) is set to open area play Thursday when its hosts Sumter-Central in a double header beginning at 4 p.m.
