Demopolis JV softball works over Sweet Water for second win

Lizzie Cannon struck out five batters over two innings of work Monday.

The Demopolis High School Junior Varsity softball team picked up its second win of the season, and its first home win of the year, with an 8-1 blowout of Sweet Water Monday.

The problems started early for the visiting Bulldogs.

Leadoff batter Samiya Lucas reached base when a throwing error turned a textbook bunt into a triple. Aerial Irby followed that with a walk, as did Tiffany McInnis.

With the bases full of Tigers, the bats came alive and Demopolis jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first with RBIs from Marianna Pearson, Emily Schroeder, April Schroeder and Stevani Foster.

Dani Shepherd opened the bottom of the second with a single and quickly swiped second before being knocked in by Tayler Pipkins, which pushed the Demopolis lead to 6 runs. A fly ball off the bat of Pearson put Pipkins home.

McInnis led off the Tigers’ half of the third with her second walk of the game but scored the Tigers’ eighth and final run on a fly ball from Zanadia Wright.

Lizzie Cannon tossed two no-hit innings with five strikeouts before giving way to Pipkins in relief. Pipkins scattered five hits, one strikeout, one walk and one run over two innings work.

Stevani Foster breaks from third.
