Harris appointed Sumter County Sheriff

York Police Chief Brian Harris was appointed Sumter County Sheriff by Governor Robert Bentley on Tuesday.

Harris’s appointment comes four weeks after the Alabama Supreme Court impeached then-sheriff Tyrone Clark Sr.

“Mr. Brian Harris was appointed Sumter County Sheriff on Tuesday, effective immediately, and he will complete the term vacated by Tyrone Clark Sr.” said Yasamie August, Press Secretary for Gov. Robert Bentley.

Harris is no stranger to Sumter County. He has served as police chief for the city of York since 2008, and as the city’s director of public safety since 2013.

“Chief Brian Harris is a professional and community driven law enforcement officer who will serve Sumter County as an outstanding Sheriff,” said York Mayor Gena Robbins.

“I am proud to have had the opportunity to work with him and greatly appreciate his dedication to the City of York and its citizens. He will be greatly missed, but I know our county will benefit from his leadership and expertise.”

Efforts to reach Harris for comment were unsuccessful.
