Greensboro girls romp in tournament opener

LINDEN β€” Greensboro (5-5) opened the Linden High Christmas Tournament with a 52-32 win over Choctaw County Thursday afternoon in the first round of girls competition.

Elexis Evans paced the Lady Raiders with 31 points, including 20 in the first half. The freshman post presence exerted herself early and often over the course of the afternoon, drawing continual double teams in the second half. Evans also finished with eight rebounds, three blocks and three assists.

Choctaw County trailed 34-6 at half before ramping up the pressure in the second half and running to a 15-9 third quarter advantage. The Lady Tigers would get as close as 18 points in the fourth quarter, but never could overcome the early deficit on the way to the loss.

Angelique Chess and Tonje Willis each scored 12 points for Choctaw County. Malesha Williams added eight points, six steals, five rebounds and two assists for the Lady Raiders while Jashundra Hoskins had six points, seven assists, five rebounds and five steals for Greensboro.

Choctaw County will compete in the third place game of the girls bracket Friday at 3 p.m. while Greensboro will face the winner of Linden and Sweet Water in the championship game at 6 p.m.
