Food drive breaks records

Rotary Club members and supporters present a check to the Demopolis Food Bank after a record-breaking canned food drive.

For the sixth year, the Demopolis Rotary Club collected non-perishable foods and cash to benefit the Food Bank, and the amount contributed each year continues to grow.

This year the club was joined by Sweet Water High School, Westside Elementary, Cub Scout Pack 41 and shoppers at Vowell’s Family Foods who helped with the drive.

The club collected $3,671, bringing the total for six years to $12,198.

The 4,690 non-perishable items donated were split between the Food Pantry and the Marengo County Department of Human Resources 4690: 900 donated to DHR and rest to Food Pantry.

Contributions of canned food items this year brings the total for six years to 16,058.

“Thanks to the generosity of Rotarians and people around the county, we had a record year in both money and canned food donations,” said Hunter Compton, co-chair of the food drive.

“Jason (Windham) got this going six years ago and continues to lead an ever-growing mission of our Rotary Club to help those in need. The support has been humbling,” he said.
