The Demopolis MIddle School baseball team put together a 2-0-1 record at its tournament Saturday, an event played in freezing temperatures at the SportsPlex.

The Tigers opened the day with a 3-1 win over Selma. Hunter Colyar toed the rubber in the contest, working four innings of two-hit baseball while striking out eight.

Colyar also helped himself at the plate by drawing a walk, stealing a base and scoring a run in the contest. R.J. Cox also walked, stole a base and scored a run while Logan McVay doubled and scored a run. Chandler Barton drew a walk in the opener while Gavin Tate and Robert Tutt each went 1-for-2.

The second game of the day saw the Tigers thump Aliceville 17-0. Tate pitched a two-inning no-hitter, striking out five batters in the contest.

The Tigers hung 17 runs on the board in their only at-bat of the game and sent 13 batters to the plate before sustaining their first out.

Andrew Patterson went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two stolen base and two runs scored. Jeremy Foster walked twice, stole two bases and scored two runs.

Nick Nelson doubled, had a RBI, walked and scored two runs. D.J. Nettles scored a run. Jonathan Lewis singled, walked and knocked in a run. D.D. Davis served as a courtesy runner for Lewis, stealing a base and scoring twice.

Jackson Lay went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs, a stolen base and two runs scored. Harrison Wood walked, stole two bases and scored a run. Russ Logan singled, walked, knocked in a run, stole three bases and scored twice.

In the final game of the day, Demopolis played to a 2-2 tie against Sweet Water in a contest that went one extra inning.

Playing through scattered snow flurries, the Tiger bats proved cold over the first four innings of the contest as Sweet Water starting pitcher Will Huckabee held the Tigers hitless while striking out three.

It was not until Huckabee left the rubber that the Tigers found a modicum of offensive success when Robert Tutt broke up the Bulldog no-hitter with a single to left with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Tutt’s base hit ignited a rally for Demopolis. Running in place of Tutt, Jeremy Foster swiped second base and ultimately came around to score, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

With two outs on the board and his team down 2-1, Chandler Barton broke from third on a passed ball and slid in just under the tag to tie the game at 2-2 and force extra innings.

Sweet Water threatened to regain the lead in the top of the sixth but saw its rally cut short when Tutt threw out the lead runner at third base on a steal attempt and Nelson fanned the lone batter he faced to give Demopolis a shot at the win.

The Tigers managed to get runners on the corners with only one out before Huckabee, who moved to third base prior to the fifth inning, preserved the tie with a dazzling unassisted double play.

With the potential winning run leaning off third base, Huckabee snagged a line drive hit at his knees and dove over to make a tag for the game’s final two outs.

Cox started the game on the mound for the Tigers, working five innings and striking out four while scattering two hits.

Xavier McIntosh walked, stole two bases and scored a run for Sweet Water. Jonah Smith singled. Hunter Mendenhall singled, walked and knocked in a run. Luke Davis stole three bases.

Flynn Mabowitz walked. Taylor Lewis singled, walked and stole a base. Huckabee and Derian Nevils each drew a walk. R.J. Rogers walked, stole a base and scored a run.

D.D. Davis, Cox and McVay each drew a walk for the Tigers. Foster stole two bases and scored a run. Tutt singled. Barton stole a base and scored a run.

The Tigers are scheduled to travel to Aliceville for a double-header Monday.
