Demopolis splits in Montgomery, scores first win of season

Demopolis (1-4) landed its first win of 2018 Saturday when it split a pair of games in Montgomery against Trinity Presbyterian and Montgomery Academy.

Trinity 7, Demopolis 2

The Tigers opened the day with a 7-2 loss to Trinity in a game that saw them fall behind 6-0 before finally scratching out a run in the top of the sixth inning. Maxwell George entered the game as a pinch runner following a one-out Hunter Thrash walk in the top of the sixth. Three batters later, Russ Logan singled George home to cut it to 6-1.

After Trinity added another run in the top of the seventh, Davis Petrey tripled to plate DeDe Davis for the final run of the contest.

Logan and Petrey each had two hits in the game. Peyton Geary and Will Turberville had one each.

Andrew Fuqua was strong in the start for Demopolis, striking out four batters over three innings of work while surrendering one hit, two walks and one unearned run. Tyler Elmore struck out two batters up one unearned run in two-thirds of an inning.

Demopolis 11, Montgomery Academy 3

Demopolis followed by giving up three runs in the top of the second to Montgomery Academy and falling behind 3-0. The Tigers flipped the switch for a two spot in the home half of the frame and turned the game around entirely with a six-run rally in the fourth en route to an 11-3 victory.

Hudson Holley reached on a dropped third strike with one out in the bottom of the second. Andrew Patterson followed with a walk before Wesley Allgood singled to load the bases.

Tyler Jones, who entered as a courtesy runner for Holley, scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 3-1. After Davis walked with two out in the inning to load the bases again, Petrey singled in Patterson to narrow it to 3-2.

Davis drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth. Two batters later, Hunter Thrash singled to put runners on the corners. Charles Casper followed with a single to center to score Davis and tie the game.

After Peyton Geary singled to load the bases, Holley drew a walk to score pinch runner Russ Logan from third and give Demopolis its first lead of the game. Patterson drove in Casper with a grounder to first and reached on an error to keep the bases loaded. Allgood hit into a fielder’s choice to place George, who was in as a courtesy runner.

Patterson then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Allgood set the lead at 8-3 when he scored on an error by the MA catcher.

Demopolis added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Petrey and Thrash walked to open the inning ahead of a Casper grounder that plated Jones, who was in the game as a courtesy runner.

Allgood reached on an error with two out in the bottom of the sixth, stole second and scored on another error for the 10-3 lead. Davis then doubled to left to plate Henry Overmyer for the final score.

Demopolis hitters drew nine walks and a hit-by-pitch while capitalizing on four errors in addition to stringing together eight hits in the 11-run outburst. Davis and Casper each had two hits while Petrey, Thrash, Geary and Allgood had one apiece.

Holley struck out four batters over four innings of work while scattering three hits, walking one and allowing three unearned runs. Petrey closed it with four strikeouts over three innings while allowing one hit and a walk.
