Demopolis softball opens with 2-2 weekend at Patriot Classic

Demopolis softball opened its season over the weekend with a 2-2 performance at the Patriot Classic in Tuscaloosa.

Demopolis 7, Curry 5

Demopolis held off a late Curry run to win the first game of the weekend 7-5. The Tigers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Napoleon Roberson walked, moved to second of a Taylor Smith sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Kendall Hannah single to right in the bottom of the first.

Alex Abrams singled in the second ahead of a Weezie Hughes fielder’s choice. After Lane Braeden Burbage walked, Roberson tripled to center for the big hit of the game and the 4-0 lead. Smith followed with a double to score Roberson for the 5-0 advantage. Elly Brown all but put the game out of the reach when she deposited a 3-1 pitch over the center field fence for a leadoff homer in the bottom of the third.

Curry scratched out a pair of runs in the fourth before Kendall Hannah hit a sacrifice fly in the home half of the inning to plate Smith for the 7-2 lead.

Curry added three more and brought the lead run to the plate with two outs in the fifth before Roberson handled the fly ball to left to end the game.

Vestavia Hills 4, Demopolis 1

In its second game of the day, Demopolis snagged a quick 1-0 advantage in the top half of the first inning when Hannah doubled in Roberson. Vestavia followed with a three-run home half and never looked back, adding another run in the bottom of the third on its second homer of the day.

Demopolis 6, Hamilton 2

Demopolis fell behind 2-0 in the top of the fourth against Hamilton before surging back with a six-run home half to anchor its second win of the weekend.

A Hannah HBP, Elly Brown walk and Bria Brown single loaded the bases to open the bottom of the fourth. An error allowed pinch runner Alex Abrams to score, cutting the margin to 2-1. Abby Grace Cameron followed with a single to center that plated Elly Brown to tie the game. Hughes then singled to left to plate Bria Brown and put the Tigers up 3-2.

Caroline Larkin drew a hit-by-pitch to force in Natalie Tatum for the 4-2 lead. Roberson then drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Cameron. Hannah drove in Larkin with a grounder to short to set the final margin.

Sparkman 5, Demopolis 2

Demopolis proved unable to overcome an early 3-0 deficit in its final game of the weekend, a 5-2 loss to Sparkman.

Sparkman hung three runs in the top of the first inning. Demopolis fired back in the bottom half as Roberson dropped down a leadoff bunt single. Two batters later, Bria Brown singled to center. Hannah followed with a double to right to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Sparkman scored a pair of runs on an error in the top of the fourth to leave the score at 5-2.

Demopolis (2-2) is scheduled to host Greensboro Tuesday night. The Tigers’ home game against Sweet Water that had been set for Monday will be rescheduled due to field conditions.
