Demopolis overcomes early deficit to down Sweet Water

Demooplis found itself in a 3-0 hole against Sweet Water Friday night before a pair of late rallies put the Lady Tigers squarely in the driver’s seat for a 12-5 win.

Charlie Vickers scored on an error in the bottom of the first to put Sweet Water up 1-0. Eve Myers doubled in the bottom of the second and scored on a Kora Myers single to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Sweet Water parlayed Sara Irvin’s leadoff double in the home half of the third into a run when BreAnna Ramsey singled her home for the 3-0 lead.

The lead remained until Demopolis rallied in the top of the fifth inning. Natalie Tatum drew a leadoff walk. Lane Braeden Burbage doubled her home to cut the deficit to 3-1. Taylor Smith then reached on an error to plate Burbage to narrow it to 3-2. Taylor Smith scored on an error to tie the game.

Kendall Hannah put Demopolis up with a single to left that scored Napoleon Roberson. Kayla Montz doubled, which allowed Hannah to score on the throw for a 5-3 lead.

Demopolis later erupted for seven runs in the top of the seventh to go up 12-3. Hannah hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Roberson. Montz hit a fly ball to right to plate Abby Grace Cameron. Tiffany MicInnis scored on an error. Smith hit an inside-the-park homer that also drove in Tatum and Burbage. Elly brown scored on a passed ball.

Sweet Water got a pair of runs back in the home half before Demopolis snuffed out the rally. Irvin singled in Vickers while Natalie Luker singled to drive in Irvin.

Montz picked up the win in the circle, striking out five batters while scattering seven hits over six innings.

Megan Roe struck out three batters while working a complete game for Sweet Water. Only one of the runs she allowed was earned.

Demopolis (12-7) is set to play in the Gulf Coast Classic Monday and Tuesday against Pleasant Valley, Southside, Dekalb and Prattville. Sweet Water (11-9) will also head to the Gulf Coast Classic.
