Demopolis BOE boosts AD, head coach Causey’s salary

Demopolis’ Board of Education granted a $6,000 raise to Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Tom Causey at a special called meeting Thursday evening.

The increase comes in the form of two $3,000 increases – one for Causey’s athletic director supplement and one for his head coaching supplement.

The increase will take effect with the new contract year, but the motion also permitted the increase to become immediate with pro rata supplement increases for the remaining four months of the current contract year.

Causey, who coached the Tigers to the 2009 Class 5A state championship, will now make $90,647 a year.

“He’s not had a financial increase in seven years,” BOE attorney Alex Braswell told the media. “It’s time, based on his performance and his character. (People) don’t know what all he does for those kids. He’s a class act, and we need to keep him.”

The vote was not unanimous, however, as Conrad Murdock had the lone dissenting vote.

Causey is 105-60 in his 15-year head coaching career, a run that has also included stops at Dallas County and Andalusia. He is 59-26 in seven seasons with Demopolis High School and has led his team to the playoffs each season. His tenure has seen Demopolis produce at least one college football signee in every year except 2008, his first spring with the school.

“I’m very grateful to the Demopolis City Schools Board of Education, Dr. (Al) Griffin and Dr. (Tony) Speegle,” Causey said. “This means a lot to me and my family. We love Demopolis and are proud to be part of this community. This is very, very humbling and we are very appreciative.”
