Dawgs decimate Demopolis, end Tigers’ win streak

SWEET WATER – Demopolis saw its 14-game win streak screech to a halt in unceremonious fashion Tuesday night as Sweet Water hammered the visiting Tigers 15-0.

Henry Overmyer and Tyler Jones singled for Demopolis, accounting for the only Tiger offense of the night against Sweet Water ace and UAB signee Jonah Smith, who struck out 11 batters over five innings for the win.

Sweet Water got its bats going following a leadoff walk to Chance Broussard in the bottom of the second inning. Braiden Broussard doubled in his older brother for the 1-0 lead. Michael Cole Jr. then singled in the younger Broussard to move it to 2-0. A Luke Davis walk and a Shamar Lewis bunt single loaded the bases before Cole scored on a passed ball. Smith drove in courtesy runner Xavier Lucy with a single to center for the 4-0 advantage before Lewis scored on an error to make it 6-0. John Thomas Etheridge’s RBI grounder drove in Sasha Smith for the 6-0 margin. Chastian Washington scored the final run of the inning on a passed ball.

Sasha Smith drove in Trent Sams with a third inning RBI grounder to make it 8-0. Sams drew a one-out bases-loaded walk in the fourth to force in Etheridge for the 9-0 lead. Davis grounded to second to plate Braiden Broussard before Lewis singled to right to drive in Reid Joiner. Lucy and Lewis scored on an error before Jonah Smith doubled in his younger brother for the 14-0 lead. The final run of the game came when Etheridge singled in Washington.

Sweet Water (16-8) hosts J.U. Blacksher in a doubleheader Friday night. Demopolis (14-5) hosts Dallas County Thursday and Clarke County Friday.
