Council approves zoning changes for manufactured homes

The Demopolis City Council moved around items on its agenda Thursday to keep from contradicting itself.

Four issues were up for public hearings at the meeting, two of which concerned placing manufactured homes in residential areas. An amendment to the zoning ordinance for R-3 Medium Density Residential District to prohibit the use of manufactured homes, which originally was to be heard first, was switched with another hearing to allow the placement of a manufactured home at a site adjacent to East Pettus Street.

Mayor Woody Collins explained the original request to approve the trailer placement had begun many months before the changes to the zoning regulations were initiated. Both proposals were approved by the Planning Commission.

A third public hearing concerned changing land occupied by the Demopolis Airport from R-1 Single-Family Residential to Light Industrial. The fourth was an amendment to the ordinance pertaining to electronic billboards to bring the Sports-Plex sign into compliance.

Council members approved all four proposals.

Raw sewage leaking into a ditch along Ash Street has been traced to a property owner who has been given a deadline to fix the problem, Collins said. The city continues to work on a design to enclose the ditch.

Appointments to the Industrial Development Board and the Park and Recreation Board were tabled until the next meeting.

The Council approved a budget adjustment for the Police Department for security at Demopolis High School basketball games.
