Commission starts process to vacate alley; accepts bids

In a short meeting Tuesday, the Marengo County Commission started the process of vacating an alley adjacent to property across from the courthouse.

The alley abuts what will become a parking lot for those having business with the county. The road is governed by the City of Linden. Property owners along the alley must give the Commission permission owners to have it vacated.

The Commission took no action to let the general public use the shooting range in the former National Guard Armory. It will remain open to law enforcement personnel only because of possible liability to the county.

Mitchell’s Contracting of Catherine was the only qualified bidder to resurface the front parking lot at the Business Development Center. The bid of $58,489 covers only resurfacing, not preparing the base where potholes have formed.

Commissioners were reluctant to approve the work for fear the potholes would recur in a few years, and the money would be wasted. The Commission decided to accept the bid with the reservation that a subsurface can be put in place.

Sixteen individuals bid on 34 surplus equipment items. The Commission voted to accept the highest bidder for each piece of equipment.

Retiree Dennis Holt, center, is surrounded by members of the Marengo County Commission who honored him with a resolution at the meeting Tuesday.

The Commission presented a resolution honoring Dennis Holt who retired Sept. 24 after 22 years as a maintenance worker in the courthouse.

Probate Judge Laurie Hall said she is looking for anyone who would be willing to work the polls for the special election Dec. 10. Those interested can either visit the Probate Office or call 295-2210 for more information.
