City to remove unapproved billboard; workers get Christmas pay adjustment

In a short meeting Thursday, the Demopolis City Council approved the removal of a billboard erected without permission on property owned by Naheola Credit Union.

Building inspector Julius Rembert said the lumber used in putting up the billboard will be kept for the city’s use.

Council members voted to give a one-time pay adjustment to all city workers for Christmas. Part-time employees will receive $50, and full-time workers, $100.

Tammy Knott received unanimous approval as the newest member of the Park and Rec Board. Mayor Woody Collins said the board preferred to have a woman on the board “to give a different perspective” from all the men who are serving.

Realtor Mem Webb’s request to vacate a northern portion of Desounettes Avenue was okayed.

The next Council meeting date was moved to the same time on Wednesday, Dec. 1, to eliminate conflict with opening Christmas on the River festivities. The Council also voted to close Washington Street from Walnut to Main that evening.
