Bunny hopping spreads a little fun throughout city

“After the virus, everybody needed a little ‘happy.’”

So said one of the bunnies that have been hopping around Demopolis for the past week. Identified only by the colors of their bow ties – which match their baskets – the quartet has shown up in the most unlikely places around the city.

They have taken a spin on the merry-go-round in the Public Square, gone for a dip in the Splash Pad, visited Vowell’s Family Market and even presented a golden egg to Mayor Woody Collins before the Demopolis City Council meeting Thursday.

Reactions to the rabbits have been mixed. At the Splash Pad, children were amazed. In Vowell’s, no one said a word. At a local Mexican restaurant, someone told them, “I thought you were painters.”

Maybe it’s the costumes.

The four bringing Easter fun to Demopolis are friends with Forkland and Demopolis ties who began coming up with zany ideas when they took part in the Polar Bear Dip some 20 years ago. At first those who dared wore only bathing suits when they went into the chilly Gulf waters. Later they began dressing in costumes, including polar bears.

Four or five years ago they decided to extend the fun and suited up as bunnies using discarded haz-mat suits and bunny heads found on Amazon.

This year the four friends having a good time are Becky Rhodes, Nathalie Taylor, Laurie Doster and Sue Perkins. Rhodes son Delton has served as photographer during the group’s hops around town and has posted them on Facebook for all to enjoy.
