BOE approves audit, calendar, hires at called meeting

In a called meeting Thursday, the Demopolis City Schools Board of Education approved several measures and tabled one.

The meeting, held at U.S. Jones Elementary School, saw the approval of the final audit review. Prior to the meeting, board members met with auditors to go over the report.

The board also okayed the academic calendar for the 2022-2023 school year. The first day of classes for students will be Monday, Aug. 8, and the last day is scheduled for May 25, 2023. Three virtual class days are included: Oct. 7, Feb. 17, 2023, and April 7, 2023.

School will be out for one week for Thanksgiving. Christmas holidays have two weeks in December plus Jan. 2 and 3, 2023, and Spring Break has a week in March. Six other holidays are scattered throughout the calendar.

The board also approved:

  • Job descriptions.
  • Quote from BSCO for re-keying of Demopolis High School for $27,800.
  • Out-of-state travel for the DHS boys’ and girls’ basketball teams to Pensacola, Fla., Dec. 26-29.
  • Use of USJ gymnasium for “A Time to Share” production Saturday, May 21.

The board tabled action on an investment grade audit agreement with Schneider Electric. At the board’s regular meeting Monday, members heard from Larry Perrin with Schneider Electric. He spoke to them about their interest in upgrading the lighting and thermostats in the school system buildings. Perrin said estimates now are that the board can save $2.6 million in utility costs over 10 years.

Board members approved the following personnel report:

  • Transfer of Tommy Perkins from nine-month custodian to 12-month custodian at DHS.
  • Transfer of Robin Lee from 10-month ARI Reading Coach to 12-month ARI Regional Support at Westside Elementary.
  • Employment at WES, pending procurement of satisfactory documentation and board approval, Karla Galvin and Sara McVay as kindergarten teachers and Katelyn Beshears, second grade teacher.
  • Alana Acker as substitute.
