Marengo County Coroner Stuart Eatmon has ruled the death of Maggie Wright, whose body was found in the Tombigbee River Dec. 29, as an accidental drowning.

“The only thing I can suggest is that she just accidentally stepped off into the river after she left the (civic center) and then drowned,” Eatmon said Thursday morning. “The state forensics department looked for anything that might suggest foul play and didn’t see any signs of that nature.”

Maggie Lean Wright, 57, was last seen leaving the Demopolis Civic Center the night of Dec. 21 walking north on Commissioners Avenue. Eight days later, a boater found a body in the river near the Demopolis Yacht Basin. The body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for an autopsy and for positive identification.

“This is very sad,” said Eatmon. “I’m just glad the family can now get some closure.”
