2014 West Alabama Watchman All-County Girls Basketball Team

The West Alabama Watchman combed over details, statistics and overall impact of the girls who played varsity basketball in Marengo County in the 2013-2014 season. And after careful consideration of dozens of local players, The Watchman has assembled its first All-County Girls Basketball Team.

Players from all seven high school programs in Marengo County were taken into consideration. There are five players on the First Team and five players on the Second Team.

Read it. Agree with it. Debate about it. But, more than anything, pass along proper kudos to these 10 young ladies for making our list.

First Team

Alexis Johnson, Sr. – Linden – The senior guard-forward led the Lady Patriots this season while averaging a double-double and posting numbers near the top in steals-per-game. Johnson wrapped her year averaging 16.4 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and three blocks per contest.

Brooke Smyly, Sr. – Marengo Academy – The 6-0 senior center was often the monster in the middle for the Lady Longhorns during their state championship season. Without her rebounding prowess and ability to step out and handle the ball, the Lady Longhorns are nowhere close to being a 27-0 state title team. Smyly averaged 12.6 points 8.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.6 steals and 1.9 blocks per contest.

Erica Bennett, Jr. – Demopolis – The smallest player in the county boasts one of the biggest games. The R.C. Hatch transfer infused new life into the Lady Tigers this season, averaging 12 points per game while posting astonishingly high steal totals.

Chandler Stenz, Sr. – Marengo Academy – The West Alabama Watchman Player of the Year as a junior, Stenz fueled the Lady Longhorns to a 27-0 mark and a state championship this season. Stenz averaged 11.9 points, 5.5 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 3.8 steals per game as a senior.

Alesia Bowswer, Sr. – Marengo High – The Marengo High Panthers were the most under-the-radar team in the county this season, but Bowser set the tone for the squad that just missed a regional tournament appearance.

Second Team

Amber Richardson, 8th – John Essex – She got our attention after a strong seventh grade campaign, but Amber Richardson showed out as an eighth grader. She led a young and feisty John Essex squad with 14.94 points per game and has the potential to improve on that mark next season.

Kiana Lewis, Sr. – Marengo High – The Lady Panther guard provided a spark for Marengo in the 2013-2014 season, contributing significantly in four major categories. Lewis finished with 13 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.3 steals and two assist per contest.

Andrea Landrum, Sr. – Sweet Water – This selection makes Landrum the first player to make the West Alabama Watchman All-County teams for softball, volleyball and basketball teams. An athletic dynamo, Landrum averaged 14.5 points per game to lead the Lady Bulldogs in 2014.

Andrea Edmonds, Jr. – Marengo Academy – The Lady Longhorns’ power forward made her biggest impact in the biggest games, all but taking over postseason play for the AISA Class A state champions. Edmonds finished the season with 10.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.8 steals and just over a block a game.

Caleb Washington, Jr. – Demopolis – At 6-1, Washington’s game caught up with her frame in 2013-2014. The Lady Tigers’ post presence flirted with brilliance in her junior season and was averaging 11.17 points per game when she sustained a season-ending injury.
